China Open Shockwaves: Anna Cheong and Mei Xing’s Epic Upset

The national women’s badminton doubles team of Anna Cheong and Teoh Mei Xing is having a fantastic return.

The Malaysian team staged a significant shock on Wednesday at the China Open in Changzhou when they defeated Indonesia’s

15 worldwide Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi and Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma The first round scores were 19-21, 21-15, and 22-20.

To advance to the quarterfinals, Anna-Mei Xing, who is now ranked No. 249 in the world, will play Japan’s Rena Miyaura-Ayako Sakuramoto.

After competing at the World Championships in Copenhagen a fortnight ago, Anna-Mei Xing has only played in two tournaments so far this year. Anna’s right knee’s anterior cruciate ligament damage forced her to miss most of last year.

The Syed Modi International victory in January and three quarterfinal appearances, including the Malaysia Masters in July, were the pair’s finest performances in 2017.

Earlier on Wednesday, independent women’s doubles Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien defeated Japan’s Rui Hirokami-Yuna Kato to go to the second round. 12-21, 21-11, 22-20
