Anish Bhanwala earned the bronze medal and Olympic quota in the 25-metre rapid fire pistol event at the Asian Shooting Championships in Changwon, Korea, on Monday.

Anish, 21, qualified strongly with 588 points but ultimately missed out on a better medal when he lost the shoot-off against eventual silver medalist Dai Yoshioka of Japan.

Lee Gunhyeok of Korea won gold by one point over the Japanese.

It was India’s 12th Olympic quota, and the fifth in the present Asian championship, following Sarabjot Singh, Arjun Babuta, Tilottama Ssen, and Manu Bhaker.

Zoravar Singh Sandhu, who qualified with the highest score of 119, also had an excellent chance of securing an Olympic quota, but finished sixth.

The Asian shotgun championship in Kuwait and the Asian rifle and pistol championship in Indonesia will both award 24 Olympic quotas to Indian shooters.

Aside from that, there will be a final Olympic qualification event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Doha, Qatar.

Melvina Angeline took silver in the 50-metre rifle 3-position event, after China’s Luo Shuang.
