Checkmate to Victory: Vidit Gujrathi and R Vaishali Triumph in FIDE Grand Swiss 2023!

Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi and International Master R Vaishali won the open and women’s championships in the FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 on Sunday, qualifying them for their respective Candidates 2024 competitions.

Gujrathi was equal for first position with GMs Hikaru Nakamura and Andrey Esipenko at 7.5 points going into the 11th and final round.

Even though Gujrathi defeated GM Alexandr Predke, GM Nakamura was held by GM Arjun Erigaisi, and Esipenko was defeated by GM Anish Giri. Gujrathi received 8.5 points, while Nakamura and Esipenko received eight and 7.5 points, respectively.

In the women’s event, IM Vaishali entered the final round with eight points, while GM Anna Muzychuk was second with 7.5 points. GM Muzychuk was held by GM Pia Cramling, while IM Vaishali drew with IM Batkhuyang Munguntuul.

GM Gujrathi and IM Vaishali joined GM R Praggnanandhaa in the 2024 Candidates competitions with their victory. The first Indian siblings to qualify for the Candidates tournament were IM Vaishali and GM Praggnanandhaa.
