SINGAPORE, 13 JUNE 2023 – A mixture of familiar and new faces will dazzle motor racing fans in Singapore after organisers unveiled an exceptional line-up of drivers, including top INEX Series drivers Donovan Strauss and Garett Gumm as well as former NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Akinori Ogata, for the inaugural Goodstock SpeedFest 2023 from 11 to 13 August. The oval racing event will see 22 drivers from Singapore, Hong Kong, the United States, Japan, Malaysia and Australia drive around a temporary 400m oval track at the Changi Exhibition Centre for the top prize of S$100,000.
Professional stock car racer Ogata will be joined by fellow Japanese Rina Ito – the only female driver competing in the U.S. Legend Car Singapore Championship 2023, former Indy Lights driver Scott Anderson as well as veterans Charles Scott Moseley, 52, and Frank Yee, 55, in igniting the track alongside a host of up-and-coming drivers, showing oval racing’s accessibility to drivers of all ages.
Moseley, who began his go-karting career in the 1990s, bought his first U.S. Legend Car in 1998 and never looked back. The American has taken part in many U.S. Legend Car races and championships and has been competing in the INEX racing series for U.S. Legend Cars for the last 19 years.
Yee of Hong Kong, with over 20 years of racing experience under his belt, brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience from victories in races all over the world, including the HMacau 50 GP Roadsport Championship Class A, Asian GT Championship Class B and Renault Clio Cup Asia Series.
Another Asian driver making waves in the sport is Malaysia’s Mitchell Cheah, who became the first Asian to compete in the ADAC TCR Germany Touring Car Championship in 2019.
Singapore’s own Denis Lian will also be looking to impress a fervent home crowd that weekend. Lian, 51, is the first Singaporean to win an international motorsports title when he won the 2002 Formula Asia championship. He will be joined by compatriot Jonathan Xie, who finished third in the 2022 Malaysia Championship Series and will be competing in his first U.S. Legends Car race.

Rising stars will also be at the forefront of the S$150,000 event as well with drivers as young as 13 years old showcasing their skills in Singapore, including Australian Lachlan Ward, who has won state and national titles of the Australian Legend Cars championship.
Teenager George Phillips, 14, from North Carolina started in the feeder Bandolero series before moving up to the U.S. Legend Cars series a year later in 2020. Since then, he has claimed multiple victories in the series, including in his hometown at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2022.
U.S. Legend Cars are made of fibreglass and are a five-eighth scaled down version of the popular Nascar racecars. The engines can produce a maximum of 125 horsepower and cars can reach top speeds of up to 240kmh. Races began in 1992 to offer a more affordable form of motor racing as the cars require little maintenance time and cost.
Drivers will first take part in three heats with the top four drivers from each heat advancing to the final 30-lap race on Sunday. The remaining drivers will proceed to the Last Chance Qualifiers with eight drivers progressing to the final. All other drivers then vie for the last two grid spots in a 25-lap Hooligan Race.
Besides the main races, spectators can also look forward to a Bandolero Ladies Race and Gymkhana race to complete a fun-filled weekend. Bandolero is a type of entry-level racing which features miniature stock cars with a tube frame and metal cage and go up to speeds of 110kmh, while Gymkhana is a type of autocross racing that involves drivers performing stunts and drifting while navigating obstacles on track.
G.E. Chapman, Vice-President of Racing Operations, U.S. Legend Cars International (USLCI), said: “I am proud that Singapore will be hosting this series, which is growing in popularity around the world. This is a very diverse and exciting line-up with a mixture of experienced and youth drivers set to take to the track. With several drivers having raced in US Legend Cars series across the globe for many years, they each bring their own unique styles which make for enjoyable viewing for spectators who can catch every bit of action on track from their seats.
“Our U.S. Legend Cars series have bred many NASCAR champions such Joey Logano, who won races in the 2018 and 2022 Cup Series and winner of the 2015 Daytona 500, and Chase Elliott, another NASCAR Cup series winner (in 2020 and 2022). I am excited to see our series make its debut in Singapore and hopefully this will inspire more people from the region to take up the sport so that they can take part in our races overseas too.
“Motorsports is growing very fast in Asia, and Singapore is the right place for us to reach fans in the Southeast Asian region. We have a good partner in Goodstock and will work with them to make the event here a success.”
Besides the adrenaline-pumping car races, spectators can also look forward to a series of entertaining offerings at the festival plaza throughout the three days. The festival plaza will be open to the public on the first day, with iconic vintage models, beloved classics, and rare JDM cars on display, allowing car enthusiasts to have the opportunity to admire these remarkable vehicles up close.
The festival plaza will also feature enthralling covers performed by skilled artists from the Singapore Music & Drama Company. A Charity Gala, held in collaboration with the Viriya Community Services, will be graced by esteemed personalities from the entertainment industry like Mimi Choo, Johnny Yip and Chng Shyue Chung.
The final two days will be headlined by the Sundown Festival 2023 – the definitive Asian music and art festival renowned for its diverse line-up of artists and steadfast dedication to spotlight the best of Asian music and culture. Mandopop superstar singer-songwriter Jam Hsiao will be rocking the Sundown Festival stage, marking his first-ever performance at a music festival. He will be joined by the likes of Bling Empire’s DJ Kim Lee, Malaysian rapper Namewee, as well as international DJs R3HAB and Firebeatz. Spectators can also catch performances by Singapore’s own talents Iman Fandi, Glenn Yong and Tosh Rock, alongside Malaysian YouTubers/dancers 3P; Taiwanese rapper OSN, Korean singer Shaun and Thai rapper Jarvis.
“Sundown Festival Singapore is thrilled to bring an extraordinary entertainment line-up to Goodstock SpeedFest Singapore,” said Sundown Festival co-founder Kelvin Goh. “Jam Hsiao as the festival headliner is momentous. And with the addition of DJs Kim Lee, R3HAB as well as Malaysian rapper Namewee, and other outstanding Asian artistes, we are confident that fans will experience an unforgettable experience that seamlessly blends the adrenaline of motorsports with the euphoria of music.”
