Leon Marchand and Kate Douglass are overall champions of World Aquatics Swimming World Cup; Singapore’s Teong Tzen Wei wins 50m butterfly bronze

Two world records were lowered on the final day of the Singapore event

SINGAPORE, 2 NOVEMBER 2024 – Leon Marchand (FRA) and Kate Douglass (USA) were crowned overall champions of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup 2024, closing out a successful campaign in Singapore on Saturday (2 Nov). Teong Tzen Wei (SGP) delighted the crowd at the OCBC Aquatic Centre with his bronze-winning feat in the 50m butterfly. He clocked 22.11 to finish third in the final, just hours after posting a national record of 21.98 in the morning heats. Two world records were also set on the final day of the Singapore stop, making it a total of five world records over the three-day event.

Noe Ponti (SUI) set the first world record of the day, lowering his 50m butterfly world mark on Saturday morning with a 21.50 effort in the heats. Ponti, who won the final in the evening, set the previous world record of 21.67 two weeks ago at the Shanghai stop of the Swimming World Cup. Singapore’s Teong also did well in the heats of the same event that morning – he achieved a news national record, improving on his previous best of 22.01 at the 2022 World Swimming Championships (25m). It is the 27-year-old’s second national record of the Singapore event, having set a new record en route to clinching bronze in the 100m butterfly on Thursday (31 Oct). 

Regan Smith (USA) broke the second world record of the day, clocking 1:58.53 en route to winning the 200m backstroke. The previous world record of 1:58.94 was held by Kaylee Mckeown (AUS), who achieved the time in 2020. Smith’s victory in the 200m backstroke marked her third win in the event across all three stops of the Swimming World Cup, having also triumphed in Shanghai and Incheon. 

Smith was one of the six Triple Crown winners on Saturday, joining Leon Marchand (FRA), Noe Ponti (SUI), Pieter Coetze (RSA), Duncan Scott (GBR) and Tang Qianting (CHN). Triple Crowns are awarded to winners of the same event across all Swimming World Cup stops. 

Singapore is the last of three stops of the Swimming World Cup 2024 series, which started in Shanghai before moving to Incheon.
