Sun Yingsha Wins Maiden Women’s World Cup

A new name has been entered into the history books at the ITTF Women’s World Cup Macao 2024 with China’s Sun Yingsha taking home the highly coveted Women’s Single gold medal and the Hammarlund Cup on Sunday 21st April. 

In a nail-biting battle between two of China’s finest players, Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu, fans at the Galaxy Arena were treated to an incredible display of talent and resilience. Ultimately, top seed Sun clinched victory with a hard-fought 4-3 triumph (8-11, 5-11, 11-4, 5-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-9), showcasing her enduring dominance on the global stage. 

This result will add to the World Number 1’s record of all major titles having already won the ITTF World Championships, ITTF World Team Championships, and ITTF Mixed Team World Cup. Now, she sets her sights on an Olympic gold at Paris 2024. 

The G.O.A.T is back: Ma Long Secures Third Men’s World Cup Title

Ma Long emerged victorious at the ITTF Men’s World Cup final in Macao to secure his third Men’s World Cup title. Fans were treated to a spectacular display of table tennis, facing fellow compatriot Lin Gaoyuan in a thrilling gold medal match Ma displayed his status as a table tennis legend, launching a comeback after a 3-0 deficit, clinching the championship in mesmerising fashion. 

A captivating spectacle from start to finish, the match kicked off with Lin displaying his dominance, securing the first three games. Fighting relentlessly for every point and covering every corner of the table, Ma laid the groundwork for a remarkable comeback, winning the next four games and securing his third Men’s World Cup title in an enthralling manner (9-11, 9-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-4, 11-8).

This victory adds to his impressive collection including two Olympic Gold medals (2016 and 2020), three World Championships in men’s singles (2015, 2017 and 2019) and now three Men’s World Cups (2012, 2015 and 2024). Significantly, marking his first title since 2021, Ma Long continues to solidify his legacy in the world of table tennis.
