Epic finals in Macao as Sun Yingsha claims her third title of the season while Lin Shidong shines with his first-ever WTT Champions win.
Macao, China, 15 September 2024 – WTT Champions Macao 2024 Presented by Galaxy Entertainment Group concluded with thrilling finals as Sun Yingsha (CHN) and Lin Shidong (CHN) captured the Women’s and Men’s Singles titles, respectively, at the Macao East Asian Games Dome.
In a fiercely contested Women’s Singles final, World No.1 Sun Yingsha secured her third WTT Champions title of the season by defeating Wang Yidi (CHN) 4-2 (11-7, 6-11, 12-10, 4-11, 11-8, 11-4). Sun, already a two-time WTT Champions winner this season, returned to Macao, China determined to reclaim the title she first won in 2022. Backed by an enthusiastic crowd, Sun delivered another commanding performance, taking her total to five WTT Champions trophies and continuing her dominance on the global stage.
“I came to Macao for this competition right after the Paris Olympics. I didn’t have a particularly systematic training routine prior to this, but I found that competing helped me quickly get back into form. I see this as the beginning of a new cycle. It might be a bit early to look ahead to Los Angeles since four years is a long time, but I do see this as a very positive start to a new cycle. I hope to keep pushing myself and deliver an even more impressive performance at the China Smash in Beijing.”– Sun Yingsha
Wang Yidi, despite falling in the final, showed resilience throughout the match, keeping the contest intense. Having eliminated defending champion Wang Manyu (CHN) in the semifinals, Wang Yidi pushed Sun to the limit, levelling the match twice before the top seed regained control. It marked the third WTT Champions final loss for Wang Yidi, who was seeking to add to her WTT Champions Frankfurt 2023 title.
In the Men’s Singles, Lin Shidong capped a remarkable week by clinching his WTT Champions title in an emphatic 4-0 win over Dang Qiu (GER)(11-5, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8). Lin, who entered the event fresh off a triple crown at WTT Contender Almaty 2024, continued his meteoric rise, adding to his impressive list of achievements at just 19 years old. His powerful and relentless style proved too much for Qiu, as Lin dominated from start to finish, marking a new era in his career with his first WTT Champions crown.
“I think I exceeded my own expectations in this event. I honestly didn’t expect to make it to the finals, let alone win the championship. In the previous event, I was really eager to win the title – I desperately wanted it. This time around, I was just as motivated, but I ended up performing even better than I had imagined. I think I managed to maintain the momentum from the last tournament, and as I progressed through each match, it really boosted my confidence.”– Lin Shidong
Qiu, the first European and first pen-grip player to reach a WTT Champions final, had a strong run, including a comeback win over 2nd seed Liang Jingkun. However, the German star was unable to find an answer to Lin’s consistent pressure in the final.
With two new champions crowned, the table tennis world now turns its attention to the next WTT Series event, China Smash 2024, taking place in Beijing from 26 September to 6 October.
