SINGAPORE, 31 OCTOBER 2024 – The first day of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup saw fast times from both local and international swim stars. Kate Douglass (USA) broke the world record in the 200m Breaststroke with her winning time of 2:12.72 while four-time gold Olympic Champion, Leon Marchand (FRA) broke the World Cup record in the 100m Individual Medley. China’s Qin Haiyang equalled the World Cup record in the 100m Breaststroke. Local swim star, Teong Tzen Wei, made a triumphant return to the pool, after an injury earlier this year, finishing third in the 100m Butterfly with a timing of 49.37s – setting a new National Record and personal best. Team Singapore’s Zackery Tay also set a new National Record and personal best in the 200m Backstroke with a timing of 1:56.70. Earlier in the day, team mate Reagan Cheng had equalled Quah Zheng Wen’s National Record in the same event.

Six Triple Crowns were also handed out this evening to swimmers who had won the same event at all three stops (Shanghai, Incheon and Singapore). Kate Douglass added two Triple Crowns to her name and picked up USD$30,000; swimmers can pick up USD$10,000 for each world record and USD$10,000 for each Triple Crown. Leon Marchand, Pieter Coetze (RSA), Noe Ponti (SUI) and Katarzyna Wasick (POL) won the Triple Crown in their respective events.

The short course series kicked off in Shanghai before moving to Incheon and finishing up in Singapore on Saturday. Each leg will see a male and female winner crowned based on points earned according to the Swimming World Cup 2024 scoring system. The overall series champion will be crowned in Singapore.
Nearly 3,000 spectators watched the final session at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.
