Men’s singles world No.2 Anthony Ginting defeated Christo Popov 21-15, 21-15 on Tuesday (17 October) to advance to round two of the BWF Denmark Open 2023.

It is the first time that the Indonesian badminton ace advances from the first round in Denmark.

Ginting was in control throughout the match and did not trail at any stage against the world No. 29.

In round two, the Tokyo 2020 men’s singles bronze medallist will face either Ng Tze Yong of Malaysia or Lu Guang Zu of People’s Republic of China.

Meanwhile, this year’s Asian Games champion Li Shifeng of the People’s Republic of China suffered a shocking first-round exit after losing 12-21, 21-6, 21-17 to world No. 26 Toma Junior Popov – the older brother of Christo.

Elsewhere, in women’s singles, 2016 Olympic champion Carolina Marin is through to round two, after her opponent Gao Fang Jie had to retire in the first game due to injury.

Spain’s three-time world champion will next face Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei
