Indian Rowers Shine Bright: Early Success at Asian Games 2023 Repechage

Following the heats on Wednesday (September 20) in Hangzhou, two men’s doubles sculls teams and one women’s doubles sculls team advanced to the repechage round.

TOPS Scheme competitors Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh finished second in their heats, posting a time of 6:27.45 to advance to the repechage round.

Arjun and Arvind will participate in Repechage 1 against teams from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and the Philippines. The top two teams will advance to Final A, while the third team will compete in Final B.

Similarly, Satnam Singh and Parminder Singh, who participated in the men’s double sculls event, finished second in their heat with a time of 6:27.01 to advance to the repechage round. The Indians will compete in Repechage 1 against Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Iraq, and Hong Kong. Both the lightweight men’s doubles sculls team and the men’s doubles sculls team will fight for Final A berths in repechage rounds on Thursday (September 21) at the Fuyang Water Sports Centre in Hangzhou, China.

In the men’s pair preliminary round, Babu Lal Yadav and Lekh Ram finished third with a time of 6:42.59, after teams from Uzbekistan and Hong Kong.

With a time of 5:38.65, the men’s eight team finished second in the preliminary round. The two, along with eight other teams, will battle in Final A next. Meanwhile, Kiran and Anshika Bharti, who raced in the Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls event, finished fourth in Heat 2, with a time of 7:27.57 to advance to the Repechage round, which also takes place on Thursday (September 21).

Kiran and Anshika of India will now play in Repechage 2 with Thailand, Japan, and Hong Kong pairs, with the top and second ranked couples qualifying for Final A and the third placed duo entering Final B.

Aswathi PB, Mrunamayee Nilesh S, Thangjam Priya Devi, and Rukmani finished sixth in the preliminary round with a time of 7:09.07. They will, however, join the other five teams in the Final A.
